Brunch went well, and Olga seemed happy. She said she was happy because I seemed happy with George. And I was. And work was going well too. A senior partner had recently given me a big client from Birmingham, Alabama.

“It’s not like he needs me as a translator,” I told Cy later, of Oliver Marshall. I guess Oliver thought Birmingham spoke an undecipherable language that only I had special skills to interpret.

“He needs you because you’re good,” Cy said, giving me encouragement.

Then, as luck would have it, a few days later Biggie fell and broke her hip. Haines said she was really in bad shape this time. I said I would come home the following weekend to help settle her into the downstairs bedroom. That would give me time to pull a few late nighters, close the deal, and release enough endorphins in George to tide him over until I got back.
